Welcome to
LabradorRetriever.com…the most comprehensive
Labrador Retriever website dedicated to that
portion of the general public that is
interested in learning more about the breed
as defined by
The Kennel Club (UK)
Retriever (Labrador) Breed Standard.
Commonly referred to as the "English"
Labrador Retriever (which does a disservice
to the many fine Labrador breeders in
Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland), it is
also identically defined by the Fédération
Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Breed Standard
which represents the pure-bred dog interests
of 82 countries around the world excluding
Canada, the United States and the United
Kingdom.
The Canadian Kennel Club
Labrador Standard is very similar to The
Kennel Club (UK) standard and to the "old"
American Kennel Club standard.
In general, Canadians
believe that Canada is the "country of
origin" (since Labrador is the mainland part of the
Canadian province of Newfoundland and
Labrador) and that
England is the "country of development". The
British believe that England is the "country
of origin". In today’s world, it is the
"English" Labrador Retriever that rules the
conformation roost in every country in the
world including the United States (in spite
of the AKC standard that does not describe
it).
For those of you that are
trying to find a well-bred Labrador puppy or
older dog, this site is specifically
intended to steer you away from puppy mills,
backyard breeders and stores that sell
puppies and to point you towards Labrador
breeders that belong to Labrador clubs
which, by their very nature, try to screen
their potential members. And, unless you are
specifically looking for a field or field
trial Labrador (which is a breed unto
itself), it is also intended to steer you
towards quality breeders of the
aforementioned "English" Labrador Retriever.
This website is designed
to walk you through a few easy steps to
Labrador puppy nirvana. It is also hoped
that as the health information links
increase that you will continue to come back
again and again for information about
maintaining your Labrador retriever. In
addition, our advertisers have been selected
because of their excellence, not because of
their checkbooks, and it is hoped that you
will find many of the items that you need to
keep your Labrador in the style to which he
has become accustomed and to stroke your
retail "taste" buds.
If you have any
suggestions as to how this website can be
improved, please e-mail its slaves (we work
